Few races this size wind through true neighborhood streets, but for the past 47 years, that’s exactly what the DAM route has done. Decades of runners passing by front steps have led many in the neighborhood to create their own DAM traditions. You’ll find everything from bubble machines to garden hoses, front porch “DJ’s” to pots being hit with spatulas, and quite literally everything in between. It's grassroots support at its finest and a highlight of the entire route.

In 2022, we reimagined our course to include the newly developed trails along the Des Moines River waterfront. Then in 2024, we amended it further to include a pass-through of historic Riverview Park. Now in 2026, we’re upgrading the athlete experience once again by inviting our friends at Red Bull to give fans and athletes a huge surge of energy. One might even say it will give you wings.

For the fifth consecutive year, the race finishes on one of the most iconic stretches in the Midwest. Athletes cross the Locust Street Bridge with the Iowa Capitol as their backdrop, a gentle downhill at their feet, and the heart of the East Village lining both sides. The finish line energy is unmatched, and it carries directly into the official post-race celebration at Cowles Commons.

Your first big boost of the race arrives at mile 4. In 2025, more than 1,500 spectators made their way to this viewpoint to cheer on athletes. The result was more than a quarter mile of cheering, clapping, cowbells, and crazy energy.

Spectators, we know you are the unsung heros of race day. The Eide Bailly Fan Zone is for you. Each year we think of a new swag item to elevate YOUR spectator experience.

Athletes, grab some fuel, because it’s time to celebrate! Help yourself after the finish line arch to fruit, pretzels and chocolate milk (thanks to Highland Dairy)

2026 Food Trucks: Beans & Beignets, Magoo Pizza, Totally Rolled Ice Cream, Tropical Sno & Fizz’d Soda and Everbowl will be on-site located on 3rd Street by Cowles Commons for specators + athletes.
